How to Get Your First Auto Insurance Policy

Minneapolis auto insuranceWhen you are getting ready to purchase your first car, there are a million things to consider before you buy. For example, whether to choose a moon roof, a spoiler, or an automobile with automatic or manual windows and locks. But then, you have to decide what kind of insurance to have on this new vehicle.

The first step in walking through the good and the bad of auto insurance is to get a good agent working for you. There are many helpful tips that agents can give you, including setting you up with prices from different insurance companies and giving you discounts. This is especially important if you are a newer driver because rates tend to be more expensive for the inexperienced, and the ability an agent has to get you discounts is something you could definitely benefit from.

Consequently, you must work with your agent to get the right coverage for your automobile, and your potential liabilities. You will discuss the following types of insurance coverage along with deductibles and limits for each:
  • Liability Insurance: Takes care of any damage you cause to others or their property. You can have bodily injury liability which will cover the medical expenses of anyone you injure while driving, and property damage liability which will cover the damage you cause to others’ property.
  • Comprehensive and collision: Collision coverage pays for damages to your car in the event of an accident. Comprehensive insurance protects your car in non-collision incidents, such as vandalism, theft or and nature’s fury.
  • Uninsured motorist coverage: While you are going to get the auto insurance coverage required by your state, unfortunately, not every driver will be quite as responsible. If you are in an accident with another driver and they are at fault but they don’t have any insurance, then your uninsured motorist coverage can supplement their lack of a policy. Without it, you would have to pay for damages out of your own pocket.
One more thing, while you might consider just getting the minimum coverage and maximum deductibles required by your state in an effort to create a cheap auto insurance policy, you might find the deductibles and limits you choose are not really appropriate for your situation. Work with your agent to find discounts and create an insurance policy that actually covers you properly so that you don’t run into more trouble down the road.
